From natural sound recording to musical deviations: an apprenticeship for musicians, music business and radio professionals, naturalists, architects, and anyone wishing to approach field recording and soundscape construction.

 

The workshop’s objectives are to provide basic instruments for the recording, creation, and reworking of a natural soundscape with special attention given to birdsongs.
The workshop will be held in the beautiful natural landscape of the Stagni di Focognano WWF Oasis by Bernard Fort, the internationally renowned French master in the disciplines of field recording and ornithological music. The biologist and director of the Stagni di Focognano WWF Oasis Carlo Scoccianti will also be present at the workshop.

Times: First day 9am-6pm; second and third days 5am-5pm

Price: 200 euros

Accommodation and board to be covered independently by participants, we recommend having your own vehicle

Workshop plan

• Soundscapes: different concepts, objectives, daytime and night-time landscape identities, biotopes
• Different ways of listening: general, selective, reduced, musical. Chronobiology.
• Nature of sound and reading sonographs.
• Technical equipment: Recording devices, listening (écoutes), sampling frequency (taux d’échantillonnage). Stereophonic and monophonic space.
• Sound recording devices: stereo microphone, M/S microphones, shotgun microphones, parabolic microphones, hydrophones, etc.
• Behaviour in the field, localisation, moving.
• Definition of acoustic image.
• Varying sound recording sessions in the field, using the provided equipment or equipment brought by participants, at dawn.
• Identification and registration of species, in relation with their habitat.
• The studio (analogue, digital). Individual systems (home studio).
• Insertion, recording, and classification of recorded sounds.
• Application of filtering.
• Composition, timing organisation, and dynamics of the soundscape
