BORDERSONG
Open Call - The song format between experimental music and pop-rock
Deadline: POSTPONED June 30th!

OPEN CALL – THE SONG FORMAT BETWEEN EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC AND POP-ROCK

For over thirty years, Tempo Reale, the centre founded by Luciano Berio in Florence, has been one of the main reference points for research in the field of new musical technologies. For the occasion of Tempo Reale Festival 2019 (section Y), to be held in Florence at the end of September, the centre is offering the BorderSong open call for young Italian musicians, a project that marks the beginning of a new path within the consistent vision of research between pop-rock music and sonic experimentation.

Throughout music history, pop-rock has sometimes evolved within an increasingly experimental viewpoint, to increase its artistic depth or to disrupt common frames of mind, while sometimes experimental music has taken more linear roads, so as to be enjoyed and therefore understood by a wider audience. A continuous exchange of codes that finds research as its common thread: researching on sound, on voice, on forms, and on communication. BorderSong originates from the idea of offering greater visibility to young artists involved in two parallel lines of research, one aimed towards experimental electronic sound and the other focused on an immediately effective, but not necessarily formulaic, artistic communication. A double objective that is extremely topical at a time when overcoming sonic and mental borders is increasingly important and when musical genres are increasingly receptive, thanks to the fusion of different forms of expression.Throughout music history, pop-rock has sometimes evolved within an increasingly experimental viewpoint, to increase its artistic depth or to disrupt common frames of mind, while sometimes experimental music has taken more linear roads, so as to be enjoyed and therefore understood by a wider audience. BorderSong originates from the idea of offering greater visibility to young artists involved in two parallel lines of research, one aimed towards experimental electronic sound and the other focused on an immediately effective, but not necessarily formulaic, artistic communication. A double objective that is extremely topical at a time when overcoming sonic and mental borders is increasingly important and when musical genres are increasingly receptive, thanks to the fusion of different forms of expression. Therefore, Tempo Reale is inviting young Italian electronic musicians up to 35 years old who are oriented towards the creation of pop-rock works and interested in live performance to present an original performance project. Two of the fundamental requirements will be the use of voice, intended as the main instrument for communication and further research, and a structural use of electronics.

RULES
The call is open to projects by young Italians (residing in Italy or in EU member countries). In the case of groups composed of foreigners, at least one Italian musician must be part of the group. The call’s age limit for each participant is 35 years: in case of groups (composed of a maximum of three elements), all members must comply with this requirement. Each participant or group of participants can present a single work: an original musical composition of a duration between 3 and 6 minutes. There are two fundamental requirements: use of voice, intended as the main instrument for communication and further research, and the structural element that is typical of pop-rock songs. There are no limitations on genres and techniques, but the music presented must convey an idea of experimental research. A national commission will select an amount of projects sufficient to reach a total duration of about 40 minutes. The selected works will form the programme of a concert within the official programme of Tempo Reale Festival 2019, concluding with the performance of an invited musician. In this occasion, each musician or group chosen may present up to two works for a total duration of about 8-10 minutes. To support this participation, Tempo Reale will offer a small budget for artists, proportionate to the number of musicians that form the group (150€ for single artists, 250€ for duos, 300€ for trios)

CONTEST PARTICIPATION
Participants must present a good quality video related to the performance of their live work within June 30th. Tracks sent after the deadline will be excluded from the competition. Videos must be sent to the email address call@temporeale.it using a YouTube or Vimeo link. Audio-visual media sent using WeTransfer or similar download platforms will not be taken into consideration. The link to the video must be accompanied by an appropriately completed entry form (form. (form)
